Het thema [nl. identiteit en representatie] zit duidelijk diep in de ziel van Adichie, want het vormt ook de vruchtbare ondergrond van de roman Amerikanah, waarin de hoofdpersonages Ifemelu en Obinze – de hedendaagse, Nigeriaanse avatars van de eeuwige geliefden wiens liefde gedwarsboomd wordt door de noodlottige realiteit – op verschillende continenten worstelen met wie ze zijn en willen worden.Of misschien is het correcter om te stellen dat ze worstelen met de onhandige manier waarop Amerikanen en Europeanen omgaan met de instroom van mensen uit de gebieden die ze eerst koloniseerden en daarna post-koloniaal bleven uitbuiten.
