Vrijdag las ik een artikel in The Guardian van Stephen Hawking dat handelde over onze houding tegenover rijkdom en dat die voor Brittannië zou meegespeeld hebben bij de brexit. Het artikel vermeldde eveneens het webadres van een door Hawkings onlangs gelanceerde website UNLIMITED*. Hawkings was de mening toegedaan dat de EU verlaten geen goed idee was. Brittannië zou geïsoleerd geraken.
Does money matter? Does wealth make us rich any more? These might seem like odd questions for a physicist to try to answer, but Britain’s referendum decision is a reminder that everything is connected and that if we wish to understand the fundamental nature of the universe, we’d be very foolish to ignore the role that wealth does and doesn’t play in our society.

In het artikel The Material Self schetst professor Frank Trentmann de geschiedenis van de houding tegenover rijkdom en constateert dat er zich op dat vlak erg diverse en wisselende houdingen voordeden in de loop van de geschiedenis.

.Een gelijkwaardig verhaal was er in Het Nieuwsblad van Tomas die een jaar in de natuur wil leven met een inkomen van 2500 euro per jaar “Tomas haalde de inspiratie voor zijn project uit een boek. Wat is het leven? Wat heb je nodig? Wat heb je net niet nodig? “

Een survivalexperiment lijkt het. Hopelijk niet zoals in de film Into the Wild (2007) waar de hoofdpersoon Chris McCandless, als hij gaat fourageren in de natuur, van de foute planten eet en sterft.
