Een verrassing, zeg dat wel. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, aartsbisschop van Buenos Aires (Argentinië) werd gisteren omstreeks 19:07 de nieuwe pontifex. Eerste wereldpaus want niet afkomstig uit Europa maar uit Zuid-Amerika. En als u in het gereblogged artikel uit The Atlantic de grafieken even nakijkt, zult u merken dat deze keuze, afgaand op de aanwezigheid van de katholieken in die regio, ons eigenlijk niet hoeft te verbazen. “Hij lijkt pracht en praal te schuwen (geen rode Prada schoenen meer?) en naar verluidt woonde hij in een kleine kamer verwarmd door een kachel, nam hij het openbaar vervoer en kookte hij zijn eigen maaltijden”, aldus The Atlantic. Wat de man tot op vandaag verwezenlijkte, in welk opzicht hij niet zo progressief is en welke controverse over hem bekend is, verneemt u in de Hufftington Post en in de mediasamenvatting van Knack Magazine. De naamkeuze verwijst echter naar een ambitieus programma.
President Barak Obama, aldus NPR news:
“As a champion of the poor and the most vulnerable among us, he carries forth the message of love and compassion that has inspired the world for more than 2,000 years — that in each other we see the face of God.”
De president voegt er nog aan toe:
“As the first pope from the Americas, his selection also speaks to the strength and vitality of a region that is increasingly shaping our world, and alongside millions of Hispanic Americans, those of us in the United States share the joy of this historic day. Just as I appreciated our work with Pope Benedict XVI, I look forward to working with His Holiness to advance peace, security and dignity for our fellow human beings, regardless of their faith. We join with people around the world in offering our prayers for the Holy Father as he begins the sacred work of leading the Catholic Church in our modern world.”
The Atlantic besluit: “…het lijkt erop, in ieder geval in één opzicht, dat de keuze politiek was: de kardinalen kozen iemand met de mogelijkheden om de gelovigen te helpen de grote verdeeldheid te overwinnen.” Alle goeds voor deze veelbelovende pontifex!
