D.H. Lawrence – Blauwkruikje

Uitkijken volgende maand naar een nieuwe BBC-film. Eighty-seven years since it was first published, and more than half a century since it was the subject of an infamous obscenity trial, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is being revived in a BBC drama that is as much a reflection on today’s society as the between-the-wars Britain that obsessed DH Lawrence, aldus The Guardian. De Britse kranten leverden hun eerste recensies en commentaren: ‘remarkably chaste’,’nothing is left to the imagination’, ‘love scenes will be soft focus’, ‘explicit sexual language will be absent’,’ much tamer than the BBC’s 1993 version’, ‘Jed Mercurio (director) insists he is being true tot the spirit of the book’. Ik heb er even mijn Penguin-exemplaar uit 1974 bijgehaald dat veertien jaar na de 1960-uitgave op de achterflap vermeldde dat het ‘complete and unexpurgated’ was. De cover van mijn uitgave bleef opvallend braaf. Andere edities kregen explicietere en gedurfdere covers. Nieuwgierig naar wat Jed Mercurio in zijn 90-minuten film met de roman heeft aangevangen.
